Wines from Portugal

Portugal is famous for its fortified wines, in particular Port and Madeira, but it is also building a reputation for table wines. For much of the 20th century, Portugal stood in relative isolation from the rest of Europe. Although the Salazar dictatorship hampered the wine industry, it also led to the preservation of a large number of indigenous grape varieties.

Although relatively small, Portugal is far from uniform, and harbours a host of climates and terrains. The moderating influence of the Atlantic quickly falls off, with inland regions marked by progressively drier and more continental climates. The south is dominated by rolling plains and divided from the mountainous north by the river Tagus (Tejo). The north is specially noted for terroir driven red and white wines, and the south and centre for rich, ripe and approachable red wines.

This wine tasting experience, in English, will be completely focused on wines from Portugal, so we’ll discover how wonderful they are. But remember, the main idea here is to have a good time tasting and learning about wine.
