Primerament el film ens presenta a Nina i Madeleine han amagat el seu amor durant dècades. Per a tots, inclosa la tafanera filla de Madeleine, elles són simplement dues bones veïnes que viuen a la mateixa planta. No obstant això, clandestinament, Nina i Madeleine tenen una vida en comú que va i ve lliurement d’un apartament a un altre. Però un succés inesperat va canviar-ho tot i el seu secret no podrà mantenir-se amagat molt temps més si desitgen romandre juntes.
