Gabriel té 10 anys i viu en un còmode veïnat d'expatriats a Burundi, el seu "petit país". Gabriel és un nen normal, feliç i despreocupat, que viu aventures quotidianes amb els seus amics i la seva germana petita. Tot d'una, el 1993, les tensions al país veí, Rwanda, van esclatar, posant en perill tant a la seva família com a la seva innocència.
