The piano trio, despite its non-homogeneous timbral combination, established itself as a fundamental chamber genre. It evolved from an initial conception as a piano sonata with accompaniment into an egalitarian form thanks, above all, to the contribution of Haydn. He endowed the piano with a concertante role, as demonstrated in his popular Trio in G major with its “Rondo all’Ongarese” finale. Mozart contributed his unparalleled melodic brilliance and inventiveness, while Beethoven transformed it with a more symphonic and dramatic writing, as shown in his innovative Trio in C minor, Op. 1 No. 3. This programme traces the origins and first flourishing of a genre that redefined the dialogue between the piano and string instruments.
