Songs and dances of the Asturies and Cantabrian mountains

In these sessions we will delve into the world of the mountain tambourine, understood not only as a percussion instrument but as a sonic symbol of rural life in Cantabria and Asturias. Through its description—postures, positions and basic techniques—we will discover its role within community and festive life.

The work will draw on field research and the memory of the main informants who have transmitted this repertoire to the present day. We will explore the rhythmic foundations of traditional percussion, pilgrimage rhythms and their function as dance accompaniment, as well as their presence in liturgical or religious contexts.

The tambourine will also be approached in dialogue with other traditional melodic instruments, analyzing its peninsular connections, similarities and differences with other provinces. We will work on local rhythms, virtuosity and improvisation, understanding this practice as a space where tradition and creativity coexist.

To take part in this workshop, it is essential to have an intermediate/advanced level in tambourine and to bring your own instrument.
