Mandinka Singing: The Voice of the Djelis
Adama Cissokho is a Senegalese singer and songwriter born in Dakar, heir to a long griot tradition — the guardians of West Africa’s oral and musical heritage.
With her we will explore the voice as a bridge between memory, emotion, and community. We will sing to connect with a living tradition where words become music and serve to tell stories.
Through the Mandinka repertoire and guided by the tradition of the djelis, we will discover how the voice carries the narrative, evokes memory, and creates connection.
Often meeting with Momi’s group, we will learn to listen to the kora and to breathe with it.
No specific academic training is required, but good pitch, listening skills, and openness to the collective experience are essential.
