The Pulse of the Djeli
In this workshop, we will delve into the sonic universe of the Kora, by the hand of Momi Maiga, a young virtuoso with international projection and a fully consolidated career.
We will work withthe instrument not as accompaniment, but as a voice that converses and the music as a space of encounter between West African tradition and the musical languages of the participants. We will explore the cyclic pulse (kumbengo) as a structural root and improvisation (birimintingo) as creative expansion, integrating our instruments into a shared sonic fabric.
Through active listening and collective practice, we will learn to translate the Kora’s modes, polyrhythms, and dynamics to different instruments, creating a hybrid ensemble where each timbre finds its place.
This will be a laboratory of musical presence: attention, breath, repetition, variation, and dialogue.
It is not a theoretical class, but a living, shared creative experience. A medium or advanced level and fluency with your instrument are recommended, along with curiosity and openness to new sounds. All string and wind instruments are welcome!
